Young Artists

Michael Coe working on a miniature portrait

The Hilliard Society is very keen to encourage new artists into the world of Miniature Art and has introduced two new awards aimed at highlighting outstanding work by first time exhibitors and young people.

In addition, a new category has been created in our annual exhibition especially for Young Artists who would like to have a go at a miniature painting, drawing or sculpture.

Anyone aged 14 - 18 at the time of entry is eligible to submit work into the Young Artist category, and there is no entry fee. This is an international exhibition and work is welcomed from all over the world - we look forward to seeing your miniature masterpieces!

General points to remember -

  • The miniature, by virtue of the fineness of its detail, must stand up to the closest inspection whilst at the same time hold its own with good composition and tonal balance when viewed from a distance.

  • A miniature is fine art on a small scale. Media used for miniature art include paper, Ivorine, Ivorex, vellum and others, watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastel, pencil etc and works also include those of enamellers, engravers and sculptors. Find out more about Materials here.

  • The annual exhibition is a juried show. All works are subject to a selection process and acceptance is not guaranteed. Please read our submission guidelines before sending work.

  • Commission charges are 35% on sales and should be included in the price of the work. This includes commissioned work resulting from the exhibition.

  • If you are unsure you are welcome to contact the Society for friendly advice and guidance. We also hold a Miniature Art Workshop during the exhibition for anyone wishing to learn more from experienced tutors.
