Hilliard society of miniature art - sue burton
Sue Burton

The Hilliard Society of Miniaturists was founded by miniature artist Rosalind Pierson and Sue Burton, gallery owner. The inaugural exhibition was held in May 1982 in Wells, Somerset and in 2012 the Society celebrated its 30th Anniversary.

The name was chosen being appropriate to the South West as Nicholas Hilliard was born in Exeter, Devon and became portrait miniaturist to the court of Queen Elizabeth I.

Nowadays portraits are only one of many miniature art genre executed with incredible technical and artistic expertise by our artist members.

In the true meaning of a society we aim to keep Hilliard members in touch with each other and represent their interests via a newsletter, which contains articles on miniature art materials, advice and information regarding other miniature art exhibitions, an annual selling exhibition in Wells, a website presence and also providing a link between member artists and miniature art collectors.

We have an international membership and new artists, collectors and enthusiasts are welcome to join at any time. The Hilliard Society of Miniature Artists is also a founding member of the World Federation of Miniaturists.
